Social Networking is an ancient form of communication between members of society to evolve a interdependent symbiotic society which prospers on complete utilisation of resources .The evolution of mordern social networking dates back to the evolution of internet and mass communication through mobiles. In both the platforms there was one common technology that was to be used it was computer science.Languages like Java developed over the years making communication all the more easier reducing the time for transfer and allowing duplex communication at a brisk pace.Client server technologies further evolved with java mobile edition and now mobile OS is in mass circulation. Operating System (OS) ,Java applets,Mobile games( java applications) all are primarily computer technology driven innovation which has made social networking what it is today.
Facebook,Orkut , Linked in etc are all internet driven social media s which are completely designed and implemented by a group of computer experts who have devised ways and means to handle the large volume of data in the form of data marts and have used large number of algorithms for different aspects(search, like, comment, update) based on regularity of use and public demand .Apart from a strong front end technology (java scripts, css manipulations, phabricator, phpembed, xhp, highly optimised C++) and a huge backend database such as mysql and storage system helpers like apache cassendra it also uses services like scribe, thrift ,tournado (source:http://developers.facebook.com/opensource/)
Social networking be it in through facebook, linked in,orkut or through letters or pamplets always needs a reliable media for data transfer and a large database to keep tract of each of the communication between any two components of the network .This again is amply provided by computer science technology through databases and its varid data extraction and manipulation techniques.Data security is an essential feature of most databases used today which again commensurates with the needs of social networking privacy.
Needs of social networking is not just to communicate or discuss and formulate opinions but also to provide overall development and complete utilisation of resources which again comes through computer science. ,Information and communication technologies for development (ICT4D) is a general term referring to the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) within the fields of socioeconomic development, international development and human rights. The basic hypothesis behind the approach is that more and better information and communication furthers the development of a society (be this to improve income, education, health, security, or any other aspect of human development). In our times, the most tangible and effective way to improve information and communication flows in a society consists in fostering ICT, ergo ICT4D.[ source: wikipedia]
The dominant term used in this field is "ICT4D" or "ICT4Dev" ("ICT for development"). Alternatives include ICTD ("ICT and development", which is used in a broader sense) and development informatics.[ source:wikipedia]
In case of data assimilation and manipulation which is also an important aspect of social networks it is noted that the intercommunication between individual components of a social network exhibits graph properties which are again provided by graph algorithms through computer science .The course of communication in social networking is often dependent on the speed of transfer of data which is far too low in case of postal form of communication where often months goes by before next reply .This again is provided by computer networks through internet in a matter of seconds thus aiding social networking. The social networking graphs have usually three parts like singleton(users who only use the site),giant component( users who participate in network evolution) ,middle region(users who joined due to offline friends invitations). The graph that demonstrates popularity can be written as f(k)= k ( 1/k^c) where f(k) is portion of vertices having degree k.According to six degree of separation [Stanley Milgram 1967] had people forwarded letters to a designated person on the basis of the contacts they know on first name basis which can be computed by median of number of hops in computer technology.
Relationships can be classified as strong or weak,Mark Granovetter, weak ties link group together and strong ties tend to form a close knitted group.Social networks can be partitioned into closely knitted group.Like in the most graphs in computer science graph theory subjects the links in these graphs too can be positive or negative.positives includes friendship, following etc and negatives includes conflict, animosity, rivalry etc .Selection and social influence form an important parameter in social networking as people with same focus link together and people start behaving like those they are linked with.Hence by homophily these are the two types of link formation.Liben-Nowell in his research on Geographic Routing also found that in social networks there is constant link density across distance scale.A mathematical model for powerlaw distribution has been propounded using connectedness of graphs. If one visualises the human users as sensors the fact that the reactions to any major event usually attains its peaks in 6-10 minutes have also been demonstrated in recent projects on facebook users.[source:Twitter:socialnetwork or news medium]
